Happy birthday and best wishes. By the way, is it true one has to stand over six ft. tall to be a Coaste. I was once told it had to do with the depth of the water or something like that, but I don't know for sure.

Scamp

P.S. Hey Birthday guy, here is the answer to the question you asked over on the Military Chat site.

I can find the USS Constellation along the Barbary Coast around 1805, in the East Indies in 1819 and again in an East Indies Squadron in 1849. At that time there was some upper deck modification work going on. In summarizing the fate of the original six USN Frigates it is stated that the Constitution and Constellation have became museum ships and that the Frigate Chesapeake has lived on in an odd way. She was taken as a war prize in 1812 war by the British and later broken up by the Royal Navy. All her timbers and fittings were used to form a grain mill and to this day there is a British grain mill called ?Chesapeake Mills? near Portsmouth.

The US Navy broke up the Congress in 1836, the British took the President along with the Chesapeake but totally destroyed the President and scattered whatever was left. The United States was burned by Union forces in 1861 lest she fall into Confederate hands. While burning she caught the Steam Frigate Merrimack on fire and sunk her as well. The Merrimack was raised and became the CSS Virginia and was the steam Ram that went up against the US Navy steam Ram, the Monitor.

Both the Constitution and Constellation went through many incarnations and at one point the Constellation was referred to as a ?Ship of the Line? and this implies significant modification from the roots of a Frigate. It?s not unlike converting a Heavy Cruiser into a Pocket Battleship. I think the many incarnations of the USS Constellation has led to the belief that there were more than one and it is quite probable that the 1854 construction date was actually a reconstruction date where a greater ?Ship of the Line? USS Constellation was converted back to the lesser Frigate USS Constellation. Anyway, this is what I can dig up while rooting around in my Navy stuff.
My source is Volume I, History of the U.S. Navy by Robert W. Love, Jr.
and "The Frigates" by Henry E. Gruppe
