Security comes at a price in both cost and privacy. There's no getting around it.

The terrorism bills were just passed. A couple things that trouble me about them are as follows:

1. A person can now be held in custody without any evidence they committed a crime.

2. The "court" that issues the new style search warrants meets in the basement of the justice building. They keep no public records and are essentially accountable to no one. When a warrant is issued to search and seize, the property seized can be taken without any notification to the person/persons who may own the property in question. In fact, the whole point is for the entry teams to gain entry, take the property and leave without being noticed. There is no recourse after this happens in regards to recovering property that was seized because as stated above there is no public accountability within this "court".

I really do not know what to compare these types of laws to but I am sure people here more versed in history will have opinions. One thing I do know is that this is a very fundamental and dangerous shift in our country. This is not simply adding more security or restricting movement based on citizenship. These new laws are stripping some of the very core of the constitution away and are only going to get worse if people do not wake up now and take action to reign in our government. This is what many in power have longed for. These laws never had a chance in the past because we as a people realized the dangers inherent in such laws. We are now being blinded to these dangers dailey by a focused propaganda campaign of fear. Today the attorney general spoke to the American public of "a credible terrorist threat in the coming week" but had no information as to location, type of threat, or time it was to take place. what are they trying to do? They are solidifying a fearful and unwary public's opinion granting them more control without regard to our constitution. The speech was pure propaganda, nothing more. There is no excuse for laws like these being past. Terrorism is not an excuse. WTC is not an excuse. We have faced threats that dwarf the recent terrorist activities hundreds of times over and have not resorted to such measures.

People better wake up, people better grab their courage and decide to defend themselves rather then giving more control to an agency that does not now nor ever will have the ability to control all terrorist activities.

In another example of where or government is heading, the postal union had to file suit today to close contaminated washington post offices. The buildings that were contaminated that housed political figures were all closed at the first sign of threat but our postal workers were told that it could be "contained on the third floor" when several sorting machines were found to be contaminated. Is this the judgment you want applied to you and your family if your office/town/city is attacked? Does your life matter less then an elected officials life? Does anyone's life matter more then the next persons life?

The cost our government is assessing to control terrorism is too high, in fact, it's self serving. If you doubt the nature of recent actions our government has taken just reference again the paragraph above this one.

We as a people can defend against this enemy. In fact we as a people are the only ones who can. It is time to lay aside our issues, our races, our economic status, or fear, our hate. We need to lay aside everything that separates us. I have watched the sickening displays of mock patriotism played out across our country and marvel at the fact people think this is enough. We need to know our neighbors. We need to know the people around us in general. Too long this country has preached isolation through glorification of the individual and the dollar. We need to realize what is real. What matters in life is life and that's it.

Many have bought the illusion of greed and power. They close those people off that cannot help them reach deeper into the fantasy. Don't buy this illusion or the illusion of our government saving us when we don't have the guts or character to save ourselves. Reach out to your neighbors. Reach out to those in the street around you. This is the only way terrorists will be rooted out. The shadow of our basic inhumanity provides ample cover to the enemy. They will have no where to hide only when all places are filled with light.
