What if the separation of church and state was to avoid the problem that the Americans saw in England. To have a gov't office or serve as an officer in the military, you had to belong to the Church of England. Every English citizen had to paid a church tax to support the Church of England, even if you were a follower of something else: Jewish, Catholic, or Calvinist.
