Unhappy Time has finally come

They are more than likely taking away my grandpa's license Tuesday morning. I am all for it for the most part. Its going to be hell with him. He has already proclaimed that he would rather be in jail than give up driving.....

I feel so bad for him, its losing part of his independence. Its just to dangerous for him to drive.

Melody,

Why are they taking his license? Has he had accidents? Or are they just not going to renew it?

My Mom is 81 and I also see that day coming. She has had no accidents, but she is aware that her driving skills are deteriorating and is wisely reducing the amount of driving that she does. She voluntarily will not drive at night anymore. I do that for her, and most other driving also.

GLAD you are there for him!

Steve

Thanks guys.
Steve, they are taking it away due to a couple of factors. His VA doctor turned him in to the whole process. Mainly due to his Alzheimer’s.

I've cried a few times over it but there is nothing to do. I wish I could zap him to a younger age but alas we all know that doesn't happen....

Thanks again Now I'll be able to add chauffer officially to my resume.

Mel
I know it's tough but it's probably a good thing for your grandfather and all those around him. A few years ago I was asked to pull the license of a good friends father who had Alzheimer. He was developing a severe case of road rage every time he got behind the wheel. Anxiety, flustration and anger are the classic symptoms which do not go well with driving.

My dad gave up his license at age 86. He finally realized that his driving skills had deterioriated badly, plus he wasn't making the kind of money where he could afford to maintain a car.

Then there was my Uncle Joe; he kept his license till the day he died but he scared the living hell out me when he drove. He had night blindness and was nearly deaf. I personally saw him run red lights 3 times. I kept telling my cousins to do something about it but they insisted it would kill him to take it away. I told them that he might kill someone in the meantime but they wouldn't listen. He passed away this past March with the license still in his wallet.

We had to do the same thing with my Father. It killed all of us, Mom and my brothers and sisters to have to do it but he had three (thank God minor ones) accidents in three weeks. He resisted at first and after a trip to his eye doctor and nurologist (Alzheimers) he finally gave in. My Mother gave hers up when she knew that she should not drive anymore. Both were in their 80's when they passed.

Default Ah don't wanna nickle...

"Anxiety, flustration and anger are the classic symptoms which do not go well with driving."

Absolutely right! Folks with those attitudes should not drive cars.
They need a good motorcycle.
