MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP JOHNSON, N.C.(April 16, 2004) -- A retirement ceremony was held in Gunnery Sgt. Barton L. Barham?s honor at the Bachelor Officer?s Quarters here April 8.

After more than 20 years in the Corps, Barham is moving on after serving as the information systems management chief, Headquarters and Service Company, Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools, for the past two years.

The Thermopolis, Wyo., native leaves active duty after stepping onto the yellow footprints back in 1983. Since then, he has been stationed a wide variety of places.
Barham went from MCCSSS here where he was trained as a basic automotive maintenance mechanic, to Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Maintenance Battalion, 1st Force Service Support Group, for duty as a basic automotive maintenance mechanic.

He also served a number of other assignments such as Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif., where he served as a fuel and electric repairman. The motivator also served as the assistant licensing noncommissioned officer, training NCO, administrative NCO and publications NCO for Garrison Mobile Equipment Division.

In addition, he served as the color sergeant for the MCAGCC Color Guard. From there, he then went on to Okinawa, Japan, and served as a fuel and electric repairman. 3rd Maintenance Battalion, 3rd FSSG. During his tour, he served as the fuel shop noncommissioned officer in charge and was instrumental in transferring existing equipment and personnel into a new facility.

In December 1998, Barham reported for duty as a motor transport maintenance instructor at the Logistics Operations School, MCCSSS. He finished up the rest of his career working with the schools here.

?Gunnery Sgt. Barham had many responsibilities as the Information Systems Management Office chief, but it was completely clear that the welfare of his Marines was his top priority,? said Lance Cpl. Jason M. Egan, ISMO network administrator, MCCSSS.


His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, seven Meritorious Unit Commendations, five Marine Corps Good Conduct Medals, two National Defense Service Medals and three Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.
