Bingo’s Birthday Month

originally called “beano”, bingo was first manufactured in December 1929 by toymaker Edwin Lowe. He based his game on several European variations, such as lotto and keno. Bingo has become part of the English language since then; you don’t have to be playing the to shout “bingo!” when you find what you’re looking for.

little known facts about Christmas

• Christmas was once illegal in England. In 1647, the puritans outlawed all Christmas celebrations, banned Christmas trees, & made singing Christmas carols a crime. Even making mincemeat pies was forbidden!

• “Xmas” sometimes used instead of “Christmas”, is thought by many to be a modern abbreviation and some even consider its use disrespectful. In fact, it originated with early Greek Christians in the 2nd and 3rd centuries a.d. In Greek, “X”the letter chi , is the first letter of Christ's name. The “X” itself was used as a sacred symbol because of its resemblance to the holy cross.

ah – December! It’s the holiday season and nothing stirs our memories in quite the same way. It’s a time for family fun, hot chocolate by the roaring fire, gatherings of friends, gift-giving, holiday story-telling, cooking, eating, singing, sleigh rides, bundling up to keep warm, making snowmen and attending worship services. May this holiday rekindle your memories and renew your spirit.
