Hamburger Hill
Much more believable then Platoon. However, We were soliders I think is pretty close to real. There is guy in my PTSD group named Jim Simmons he was a SP4 when he landed in the Ia Drang Valley with LTCOL Moore. He said he couldn't go see the movie as it would really bother him. I guess being there really has an impact on him. I for one would not want to see any movies about Dak To or Operation Wayne Grey in the Plei Trap Valley (the special forces types called it the Valley of Tears didn't take long to find out why).

Pack, Frisco, DD, Homie and A.B, thank you for your comments and A.B, I would be proud to be Uncle Bill to your daughter. I’m well aware of your efforts concerning RVN Vets and educating others about what really took place. I’m proud to call you my friend.
Steve, I have seen the movie and I can’t really comment on the combat scenes. My company wasn’t involved in the actual assaults on the Dong Ap Bia mountains so I don’t know how accurate they are. Besides the comments on what my company did during OP Apache Snow, everything else I posted came from Flanagan’s writings. Apache Snow continued until June 8, 1969 and the term “mop up mountain” used by Flanagan shouldn’t be taken lightly. There was still contact with varying sized enemy units, guessing they were the remnants of the NVA forces that were on the hills. Operation Montgomery Rendezvous began on June 9th, more on that in July.

I liked the movie Platoon only because a lot of the charaters in it reminded me of people I was with. Like most Vietnam movies Platoon had to have the part where the Americans beat and rape inocent civilians. What V. war movie would be complete without that. Hamburger Hill didn't, but I wondered about the scene with the girls and the hot tub. I never saw any thing like that when I was near the area or anywhere else in ICORP.
Bill, you sure were in a terrible place during most of your tour. [Thanks] I've also heard from engineers who worked on roads and clearing jungle in the Ashaw. Bill, thanks for giving me that link on Operation Delaware. It cleared a lot of things up for me and some of my freinds. |

This photo belongs to Col. Conmy, the CO of the 3rd Brigade back in the day. It shows the locations of the units for the final assault.

Bill :
Thanks for all the info about Hamburger Hill. When I was stationed in Fort Hood from Dec 1970 - May 1971, there was a soldier in my barracks, who slept across the walkway from me, who was there. I wish I could remember his name. I do remember his favorite saying though..."If worms had machineguns, birds would have a hell of a time"...... Larry
