Army Recruit Arrested On Eve Of Basic Training

An Army recruit just hours away from leaving for boot camp ended up in handcuffs after an alleged drunken crime spree in Boone County early Wednesday morning.

It's a story 9News broke.

According to police, 19-year-old Christopher Chavez was staying at the Airport Holiday Inn in Erlanger with some fellow recruits in preparation for the morning flight out of CVG to basic training.

Chavez reportedly got into a fight with some other men on the 5th floor of the hotel around 2 a.m. During the course of the argument, he allegedly grabbed a fire extinguisher off the wall, setting off the fire alarms.

Police say Chavez then took the fire extinguisher to the nearby Mobil gas station on Airport Exchange Blvd. near Mineola Pike with the intention of getting some beer. When he discovered the gas station closed for the night, he allegedly attempted to break in, but was unsuccessful.

When police arrived on the scene, Chavez reportedly became unruly, spitting and cursing at the officers. As a result, police put a spit mask on him before handcuffing him.

As police prepared to put the recruit in the back of the cruiser, they say he suddenly collapsed and went into convulsions. Rescue crews responded and treated him on scene before police finally took him to jail.

According to CVG spokeswoman Barb Schempf, Chavez is charges with alcohol intoxication and criminal mischief and is currently in the Boone County Jail.
