Fresh from the outskirts of Bagram Air Base, Greg and family came over for some of his Dad's world-famous BBQ ribs and other fixin's yesterday! Naturally, it was great to spend some time with him, and to hear some of the success stories that are being written on a daily basis in Afghanistan.
The unit that he replaced was composed of part of the Utah Army National Guard, which naturally had a high concentration of Mormons, or Mo's as they were called. Being another MI unit, they had the mission of meeting with the locals to try to elicit some information that could be refined into actionable intelligence. But since their religion discourages the drinking of tea, and drinking tea is about the ONLY way to start any conversation of value, ultimately the Mo's were rather useless in working the HUMINT field. They were less than diligent about government property too.
We also had a discussion about whether or not UBL is room temperature or still kicking. It is his rather informed opinion that UBL is dead, and both sides, US and AlQaeda, don't want to make that annoucement, for polar opposite reasons. If we let the news out, it will make the POS a martyr; if AlQaeda 'fesses up, they will lose some face, and perhaps their major psychological rallying point.
Greg also expressed thanks for all the goodie packages and other blessings he has received from folks on this site. And I thank you as well.
