Ok guys, let's see how heated an aguement we can get going here.

What is the best all around rifle for North American hunting and why?

Personally, I have and use a 7.65 mm Argintine Mauser. Great knock down power and flat shooting. Ammo is pretty spending but worth it. Never put it on a chrono, but would guess it does pretty good.

Model M-39 Finnish in 7.62 X 54r will put down anything in the U.S. but your two choice's will also do nicely. I passed on a 7.65 Argintine Mauser, bore was really rough and the ammo is expensive.

I've got an old Sharps in .50-70 that will put down anything in North America including a Grizzly or a Bison. I'd not want to hit a Grizzley with a 7.95 Argentine Mauser......might just make him mad.

Best how? Most accurate? Most stopping power? Easiest to carry? Cost? Open country use, or dense woods?

Too many variables.

I guess, to me having started this thread, best would mean best all around. All variables combined.

338, yea the 06 will do a good job, but its a little lacking for buff and bears, esp a pissed bear. I think the 338 is just right for big game, abeit a bit much for deer

Default My two cents...

...there are a couple of North American game animals for which something with a bit more ooomph than an '06 might be desirable.

But...the question was best ALL AROUND. Do those few animals fall into that category?

A pissed grizzly needs a shoulder hit to destroy his locomotion.
If you don't hit him there then it don't matter WHAT you're shooting, he'll be coming on.
