I?m not sure the P-38 got to the European theater in any significant numbers, Ron, but if so, I would imagine they would shown the P-51 what a set of tail lights looked like as often than not. Very fast airplane that trumped anything the Japanese could put up.
Anyway, thought we were talking about Europe and that is what I was focusing on. But in a larger discussion, there was some fantastic aircraft produced in very little time and the P-38 is very noteworthy example. Scamp

We had an aircav troop , Delta Troop 3/5 Cav. They came home every night. Then came Lam Som719 and they died a lot in Laos. I felt a lot safer in the bush on the ground. P-51 my friends Dad flew one in WWII and still has a sparkel in his eyes when he talks about them

Every September we have the Reno Air Races and the P-51s are always the main attraction in the unlimited class. They go wing up vertical around the pylons and just absolutely cook down the straight away- a total sight-sound overdose. ?Dego Red? has been the P 51 to beat in the last few years.
