Question Forgotten History/Abandoned Men

6-4-2023

The abandoned cemeteries that now lie just off of the coast of Garden Key (The Second Largest Island of The Dry Tortugas) hides stories (and the corpses) of many a being that history has, for one reason or another, chosen to forget or literally to abandon!

As a kid, not too much beyond “The Age of Reason”, I use to ponder the stories that were related to us by an old summer camp counselor, about the ghosts and the goblins that supposedly haunted the grounds, in and around, that heavily-wooded, old summer camp in Massachusetts! And to a mere child, the vivid (and hair-raising) tales that centered around the three century old cemetery that bordered the camp, were more than enough to frighten ‘The Living Hell’ out of any small kids within that facility, and to keep them safely within their bunks in the ebon of the night! Or even from roaming around within the darkened woods alone after sunset – and it damn well worked too especially within a region that still harbored far more superstition than even “Good Old Yankee Common Sense!!”

I have also found, in the many years since that time, that regional superstitions still permeate many portions of “Our Old American (and even worldwide) Persona” – and more is the shame, as many a good (and sanely reasoning) man and woman has been villainize and even terrified, by these tales of “Dark-Ages Horror and Woe!” And once again, (and in this respect), this location that lies within the watery depts. of “The Old Dry Tortugas”, somewhere off of “The Coast of Florida”, is rumored not to be all that much different!

And based upon mankind’s own bugaboos and superstitions (and for whatever reason), the practice of horrifying mere children, has been with humanity since way before “Our Own Colonial Days!” And as a matter of fact, mankind has always been in the business of terror, even before “Old Count Vlad (The Legendary Vampire of Transylvania)” first buried his slimy yellow fangs deeply into ‘The Lilly-White Necks of the Dark Ages’ – and so it is!!

Post It seems many fear cemeteries:

HC - It seems many fear cemeteries:

The fear of cemeteries is known as coimetrophobia. For some, the fear of cemeteries is not just anxiety over visiting a cemetery but actual fear that causes significant distress. People suffering from this type of fear usually avoid going to cemeteries because they think they can feel the presence of spirits around them or fear the unknown.

Also; Why do some people not want to be buried in cemeteries?

They have no attachments other than fond memories to any of those places, and do not particularly desire to be buried in them. That is a common experience.

Our culture (US of European origin) was strongly pro-burial. But as time went on, that was often done simply because it was what we usually did.

Personal note: To me Death is just that - you cease to exist and
what happens other than that - is to be determined by Will's at
that time - should there be a Will? The Wife wants to be cremated
and buried with her Mother - no problem - it will be done!
-
Me - I told the kids to cremate me turn my ashes over to the VFW
to be buried in a VN Wall Slot at a local Military Cemetery.
-
As they say to each their own! We gave it 50+ years of marriage
plus two Daughters and three Grand-Kids - to date.
-
God Bless Them All!
