Default How Old Is Grandpa ?

This is the question. How old is Grandpa???

Stay with this -- the answer is at the end. It will blow you away.

One evening a grandson was talking to his grandfather about current events.

The grandson asked his grandfather what he thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general.

The Grandfather replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born before:

' television

' penicillin

' polio shots

' frozen foods

' Xerox

' contact lenses

' Frisbees and

' the pill

There were no:

' credit cards

' laser beams or

' ball-point pens

Man had not invented:

' pantyhose

' air conditioners

' dishwashers

' clothes dryers

' and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and

' man hadn't yet walked on the moon

Your Grandmother and I got married first, . . . and then lived together.

Just about every family had a father and a mother.

Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, "Sir".
And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir."

We were before womens-rights, computer- dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy.

Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.

We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.

Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege.

We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.

Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins.

Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started.

Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends-not purchasing condominiums.

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings.

We listened to the Big Bands, early rock & roll, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios.

And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey or Elvis Presley.

If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan ' on it, it was junk.

Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of.

We had 5 &10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents.

Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a CocaCola or Pepsi were all just a nickel.

And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards.

You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $800, . . . but who could afford one?

Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon.

In my early years:

' "grass" was mowed,

' "coke" was a cold drink,

' "pot" was something your mother cooked in and

' "rock music" was something new and our parents didn't "understand".

' "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office,

' " chip" meant a piece of wood or something made from a potato,

' "hardware" was found in a hardware store and

' "software" wasn't even a word.

And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap......... and how old do you think I am?

I bet you have this old man in mind..................you are in for a shock!

Read on to see--------- pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time.

Good Job - gave me a chance to reflect on my busy day. So true are things that have happen in our generation. Grandpa used to tell me when I asked him - why doesn't he ever get Grandma something for the holidays - he would tell me if she needs it she buys it. For Christmas they used to exchange fresh fruit and handmade toy's for the kids -

I miss the simple life we used to have in the late 40's and early 50's now the pace is such that I can barely keep up with it. My grandkids have so many things available that we didn't and that goes true for us when we were young. Each generation gains a little more each passing decade. I can't imagine what it will be like in 50 years? I know I won't be here but they will be and their kids - such wonder's they will encounter. I pray for a peaceful and stress free life for them - I'm getting burned out.

Thanks Gimpy - that was really good to look back on.

As a 22 year old, I am by these standards a baby (goo goo ga ga), but I have even noticed how things have changed for kids (yeah odd coming from my mouth). This is not a 9/11 thing though as I think it has been going on since before that sad day. When I was young (Bush 41 was nearing the end of his term) I would play with my friends until dark and would do it outside. We didn't play with video games much (the best I had was an old Nintendo). While this time was spent in the confines of Forts Riley and Hood, I don't think my parents worried about sexual predators. Nowadays, I would be afraid to let my kids (don't have any yet) go out in the evening. Kids don't know what playing is all about. They sit in front of the tube and play games way too mature for them and we wonder why there are so many overweight kids. Parents, I think, are too afraid (and rightfully so) to let their kids be outside because of all the attention given in the media to sex predators. I hope that my generation will stand up and take back the streets. All that needs to happen to bring back the childhood of yesterday is for us to put creeps that harm kids and others away for a very long time, if not permanently. I ask you, how many of your parents worried about someone taking you as a child or if you worried about it?

Default Some Mistakes in this.

Andy and I let you know when this list first appeared many months ago that:

Frozen Foods came about on mass production in 1930.
Birdseye was the inventor.

Penicillian was in full production by 1940, invented in 1928.
Used in hospitals throughout WW II.
Alexander Fleming first got it mass produced.
First mention as a drug in 1896 by Duchesne in France.

First Television came about in 1923 but we all know it wasn't until after WW II that it was well known.

Women's rights. That movement started with Eve. Who are we kidding.

A few little mistakes in this list. But never the less cute.

As a soon to be Graduate Teaching Assistant in History, I say way to go Keith, you get an A+ for taking extra time to research the list and point out errors for us.
