The Double Standard Of The Middle East?

Giving the underdog an edge is the sign of a real sportsman. However, only a damned fool gives a mortal enemy any kind of edge at all! And yet, when it comes to warfare these days, we always seem to employ a double standard. One in which anything that we do is viewed as criminal and not fair, whereas any atrocity committed by a deadly foe is readily acceptable!

Also, tell me why we spend countless billions developing weaponry to save our people?s lives in combat, while efficiently eliminating a deadly foe? And yet, when push comes to shove, we rarely (if ever) use these weapons? Could you imagine what might have happened had we "NOT" utilized the two A-Bombs back in 1945? "How many more American and ally lives would have been lost, were we forced to invade Japan?"

Nowadays, however, no weapon is out of the question where an enemy is concerned, be it terrorism, dirty bombs, or what have you! Yet let some out of hand trooper abuse the rights, or damage the ego of an enemy that has sworn to kill us all, and all International Hell breaks lose! "And this from so-called friendly nations that are as multi-faced as a sardonic hydra!

It is easy, after all, to send our troops out into harm?s way, while those doing the sending are many thousands of miles removed. But to carry on a war by the other guy?s rules is suicidal. As such, maybe some politicians should worry less about world opinion and historical image, and more about not getting involved in conflicts that you expect our people to fight with one hand tied behind their backs, or wars that from the git-go, are being waged merely to bloody an enemy and not stop him once and for all!

Finally, it is my opinion that this conflict in the Middle East could go on, in one form or another, until the end of the first decade of the Twenty-First Century? And the way that it is going, and baring a miracle, it will end as it did in Korea or Somalia, with a strategic withdrawal. "No clear-cut exit policy, or only a negotiated peace, if we are lucky!"

We are fighting a guerrilla war in the Middle East, and this type of combat rarely leads to total victory. Especially, when (as I said above), we fight by the other guy?s rules, as we are doing at this very moment, in my opinion! Granted, our military is still the best and most courageous in the world - but is that alone enough in these days of mindless terrorism and diplomatic generals?

And for the record, how much has really changed since the Iraqis voted on this new constitution? A constitution that was suppose to usher in a period of (at least) glasnost? "For that matter, how much will ever change in the Middle East?"
