Don't know about what it was like in the jungle, but sitting on a patrol boat on the river at the DMZ, during the rainy season was just about the same thing. Every splash you heard in the water, you auto. thought it was a sapper. Fog was bad for us, that's when the VC tried to move most of there supplies down river, using there long poles to try an quietly slip by us, guess maybe they did a few times. "An thats all I got to say about that"

Start your own thread about your experience on the rivers by the DMZ. I have a few pictures and a story.
Water, Fog, Sappers, not a good combination

Next time you go camping, about 4:30am or so, Get up, go outside and wait for an hour, you will experience the dark time, unless there is a full moon.

Damn Ron you put right back in the Highlands again. People didn't understand that at night the Highlands got out right cold sometimes.

Dark and cold, The only thing worse was dark, cold, wet and someone shooting at you.
The highlands were so damp and humid that your gun would steam when fired,

Spent plenty of nights on perimeter guard, wet to the bone and shivering my ass off in The Highlands. Also spent a few nights sandwiched in between 3 or 4 other guys for warmth while sleeping. And yep, could get darker than inside a black cow. And the fog/clouds right down to the ground and could move around like it had a life of it's own. Could be scarey as hell in the eerie lights of hand flares or flare ships. All of this accented by the creepy feeling that you were being watched or the knowledge that Charlie was NEVER far away.

Its been way to long to worry about the Gun/Rifle thing the military has. I didn't understand it then and don't give a shit not, It's a gun, Gun is what it will always be. I have several guns in my closet some are handguns.
and the Navy rides around in boats.
