In my opinion, a true patriot is not someone who barks upon command! Nor is he the eternal yes man who has no opinions of his own, save for that which has been programmed into him (or her) by heredity, environment, politics, or even repetition!

A patriot is a person who may not always be right, save for in their own mind, but he (or she) does not fear to say what they truly feel, and this, regardless of whom they may offend or who’s edicts they may contest!

In short, a patriot is a person on the order of Patrick Henry, Thomas Paine, or even Molly Pitcher, for that matter, who is always willing to take a beating to defend and to stand behind those tenets that 240 plus years of American History has always espoused! “And even though there names may be known but to God Himself, their deeds, their dedication, and their love of country can never be disputed or contested!”

Literally tens of thousands of genuine patriots have displayed their zeal, their courage, and their élan over the past two and a half centuries plus, and thousands more will eventually be called upon to show that the actions of those who operate only on their own behalf, or at the bequest of some self-serving political puppet-master, will not forever be tolerated or accepted – “For we are Americans, we are stubborn individualists, and most of all, we are patriots!”

A real patriot is someone who loves their country enough to speak up when they see something that needs to be changed; not someone who blindly assumes that their government knows best and is always right no matter what.

I am a patriot in the real sense of the word, not the post-9/11 "if you don't kiss our government's butt you're not a real patriot" sense.
