GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS FROM VIETNAM
Good and Bad news From Vietnam
Bad News: Because of the increase in traffics on the Chuong Duong Bridge across the Red River, The VCP decided to increase the traffic by use of pontoon Bridges, a relic of the Vietnam War when the Longbien Bridge was destroyed by US Airforce (Note: The Longbien Bridge was built by the French at the beginning of the 20th Century using the same company that built the Eiffel Tower , The Chuong Duong Bridge was built more recently in the 1960s first by the Chinese who abanfdoned the project when relation with Vietnam worsened then by the Russians. This bridge now showed sign of weakening structure indicating that Chinese and Russian Technology was not on a par with European or American Technology. A third bridge Thang Long was built even more recently but all three can not take care of the increase in traffics toward Haiphong the Seaport and Noibai the Airport). I believe that both increase in traffics and weakening in the Bridge structure were factors that could be predicted and taken care of by proper and modern solution not by half assed measure which reflected badly on the VCP. Good News: A team of 6 Vietnamese Elementary pupils had won recently the first prize in Science and Math competition in Indonesia(VTV4) with 2 gold, one silver and one bronze medal. 3 important facts should be noted: First these children are elementary school students and were not undergone any special training to pass the exams. The first individual prize was obtained by a young Vietnamese girl. Second the examinations was all in English a language to say the least still foreign to Vietnamese students more so than for students coming from the other 8 participatory countries. Last some of the Vietnamese team members came from non-state schools, i.e., the newly authorized schools run by private companies or individuals indicating improved competitiveness of private schools. I strongly believe that the most important asset of Vietnam for development and enrichment is the brain power of her youth that need to be nurtured and motivated for the task of modernization. I believe YOU wrong. Without heart the 'brain' is supermarket commodity, like 1 minute noodle - for example.. |
