Marines Credited With Rescue at California Motel Fire

LAKE FOREST, Calif. — A handful of off-duty Marines are being credited with saving lives at a Lake Forest motel when they saw flames and smoke coming from its buildings and raced room-to-room, rousing sleeping guests.

Orange County Fire Authority Battalion Chief Kris Concepcion says the fire broke out shortly before 8 a.m. Sunday at an Americas Best Value Inn. It's cause is under investigation.

Concepcion says six Marines on leave from Camp Pendleton went door to door rousing people after three of the Marines spotted flames and smoke. They even carried one elderly man to safety.

The Marines, who were staying at the motel, say they just did what they have been taught to do.

Amy Amadito-Phelps says she and her husband and 14-month-old son were sleeping in a room near the flames when they were awakened.
