KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — Two German paramedics have been presented with awards by the Army for saving the life of a servicemember’s baby at Baumholder, the Army and the rescuers said.

Daniela Therre-Ost and Andre Jank received Certificates of Appreciation last week from Col. Jason Edwards, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander.

Edwards said the paramedics were heroes and the certificates were a small token of appreciation for their quick actions.

The rescue workers had rushed to Baumholder on a Saturday afternoon in late August after getting a call about an unconscious baby at the base, Therre-Ost said.

“Calls to an emergency at the base in Baumholder are not unusual, but this was different,” Therre-Ost said. “An emergency involving a baby doesn’t happen often, and it’s not something you really want to see.”

The baby is the child of a U.S. soldier assigned to Baumholder and his wife.

When the paramedics arrived, they realized “this was a real emergency” and called a helicopter ambulance to come to the base, Therre-Ost said.

The two paramedics were able to revive the baby before an airlift to a hospital in Trier, she said.

Earlier this month, Edwards recognized Kemisha Miller, a caregiver at the Wetzel Child Development Center on Baumholder, for saving the life of another child.

Miller was credited for performing emergency lifesaving procedures on a one-year-old in the center’s care who was choking on a peach.

Edwards presented Miller with an “On the Spot” cash award of $500 and a coin.

Finally some good news - Plus and new Baby. Congratulations to the Parents!
