Unwinnable Iraq war is Vietnam revisited

To the editor:

I served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1972, including two deployments
to Vietnam. I am proud of my military service, despite the fact that
it is/was abundantly clear that our government's decision to prosecute
that war was, to say the least, ill-advised on many levels. However, I
must emphasize that many of the finest people I have ever known have
served, or are currently serving, in the military, including two of my
own children.

It was also abundantly clear, from the outset, that the decision to
undertake the war in Iraq was equally ludicrous. As Mark Twain noted,
"history doesn't always repeat itself, but it often rhymes." It was
obvious that our superior military expertise, underscored by the
professional commitment of our brave troops, would prevail in the
short term. And it has.

However, it was also obvious, before the first shot was fired, that
this would be an "unwinnable" campaign, in its broadest sense, simply
because the people of Iraq, like the Vietnamese, simply do not want us
there, thereby mak...
