The Wall Street Journal: As Alliances Shift, Syria’s Tangle of Wars Grows More Dangerous

“Here’s what happened in Syria over the past week or so. Try to make out who’s whose friend—and who’s whose foe. The Russian-backed Syrian regime gave free passage through its territory to American-backed Kurdish militias so they could fight against America’s NATO ally Turkey. The Syrian regime at the same time attacked these American-backed Kurdish militias in another part of the country, triggering U.S. strikes that killed more than 100 Syrian troops and a significant number of Russian military contractors. In yet another part of Syria, Turkey threatened to attack American troops embedded with these Kurdish forces, prompting a counterwarning of an American military response. Russia, meanwhile, stood by and didn’t use the vaunted S-400 air-defense system it had deployed to Syria as Israeli bombing raids wiped out as much as half of Syria’s own air defense capabilities. Moscow also remained determinedly silent over the Russian deaths in U.S. strikes, the first time a large number of armed Russian citizens were killed since 1920.”

The Atlantic: What Iran Is Really Up To In Syria

“On the day Syrian anti-aircraft missiles downed an American-made Israeli F-16 fighter jet, a banner boasting of the feat in both Arabic and Hebrew script went up in a village in southern Lebanon. To the northeast, loyalists of Bashar al-Assad, the president of Syria, distributed sweets to passersby on the streets of Damascus while the owner of a men’s clothing store put up a sign in his window reading: “Discount on the occasion of the downing of the enemy’s jet!” In a television studio in southern Beirut, the media arm of Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group and stalwart ally of Iran and the Assad regime, broadcast live commentary declaring the incident a major turning point. “We are witnessing a strategic transformation on the ground,” declared one of the pundits. “From now on, we can’t speak about [the] Syrian army, Hezbollah, Yemeni army, Iraqi army, and Iranian army. We must speak about one resistance axis operating in all theaters.” With the bellicose rhetoric and heightening tensions, the incident seemed certain to finally draw Israel into an all-out military confrontation with Syria—one that could spill into Israel itself and across Jordan and Lebanon. Iran’s vaunted axis would finally have its “total war” against the “Zionist enemy” and its “master” America and the “Jewish monarchs” of Saudi Arabia. But war with Israel is the last thing Iran and Hezbollah want.”

Voice Of America: IS Leaves Deadly Legacy Of Explosive Hazards In Iraq

“The U.N. Mine Action Service reports Islamic State militants have left a deadly legacy of tens of thousands of explosive hazards and improvised explosive devices in cities throughout Iraq, preventing the safe return of people to the homes they were forced to flee. War in Iraq has displaced nearly six million people since 2014. More than half since have gone home, but the U.N. Mine Action Service reports an estimated 2.6 million people remain displaced. It says cities retaken from Islamic State militants are heavily contaminated with explosive hazards, improvised explosive devices, other lethal weapons, preventing people from returning home safely. It says as soon as areas are liberated, risk assessment teams are deployed to survey the situation, with clearance activities following as soon as possible.”

The Wall Street Journal: Pakistan, Seeing New Pressure From The West, Moves Against A Militant Group

“Pakistan is hoping to head off an attempt by the Trump administration to exert further pressure over terrorism by putting the country on a global terror financing watch list, according to a senior Pakistani official. Miftah Ismail, adviser to the country’s prime minister and Pakistan’s de facto finance minister, said that the country had in recent days undertaken a wide-ranging crackdown on the Jamaat-ud-Dawa group, which also is known as JuD and is blamed by the United Nations for the 2008 attack on the Indian city of Mumbai, which killed 166 people. Washington has pressed Pakistan to take action against Islamist militants on its soil, and blamed the country for giving sanctuary to Afghan insurgents, announcing last month that it is withholding $2 billion in security assistance. The international Financial Action Task Force, meeting in Paris next week, will consider a proposal by the U.S., co-sponsored by the U.K. and other Western governments, to put Pakistan on a list of countries that don’t comply with international regulations to squeeze financing of terrorist groups, said Mr. Ismail.”

The Guardian: Former British Soldier In Court For Terrorism Offence Of Fighting Isis

“A former British soldier was in court on Wednesday facing an unprecedented prosecution under terrorism legislation for fighting against Islamic State in Syria. James Matthews, 43, is thought to be the first person prosecuted under such legislation for assisting a group helped by the UK government. Matthews, who joined Kurdish forces to fight against Isis, was cheered by a crowd outside Westminster magistrates court as he arrived for a preliminary hearing. He has been charged with one count of attending a place used for terrorist training, under the Terrorism Act 2006. The offences relate to his time in Syria, where he fought with the Kurdish forces, the YPG. He previously appeared in a Channel 4 documentary, called The Brits Battling Isis, about his decision to join the fight against the jihadist group. At the preliminary hearing, Matthews spoke to confirm his name and date of birth. He was granted conditional bail until his first hearing on 1 March, at the criminal court, where future court dates will be discussed.”
