After figuring out

that these are Union casualties (Alabama? Georgia? etc.) and realizing that more people than Pemberton and Thomas passed each other going in opposite directions, the losses to disease are more horrific than I imagined! If you start with St. Charles, Il (where I live) and continue up the Fox River through Aurora (one of the state's larger cities), everyone would be dead from disease alone! And these are only the federal casualties! Do the math (KIA vs. Disease deaths) and the determination, morale and belief in their cause (both sides included, the Confederacy's losses had to be as bad) is astonishing. Lord! Don't let me go against these men!
Fianlly, it stands out: So. Carolina - no casualties listed. I'm sure the Palmetto boys are proud of that, and I wonder if Sherman's bummers knew it when they crossed the border.

These are Union alone. Some southern states contributed Union regiments.the total deaths were 625K. An interesting aside is that at Gettysburg, more Pennsylvanians fought there than any other state but New York state had the most casualties. fully 66% of the deaths were from disease. Go to E.B. Long's Civil War Day by Day if you want to absorb some mind numbing facts.
