Invasion of the North
I'm unclear about something. From what I remember the US never
invaded the north. Why was this? Did it have something to do with the fact that war was never declared? There was something called the DMZ. Was the US not allowed to cross this line(on the ground)? |

LBJ would not permit an invasion of the North because he remembered Korea, when the Chinese came into the war once Peking decided that we were out to topple a friendly socialist regime on its borders. We know now that Peking and Hanoi did indeed have a pact which involved the entry of China into the war, The Joint Chiefs had contingency plans for such an eventuality, and they involved the use of tactical nuclear weapons. |

I'm unclear about something. From what I remember the US never invaded the north. Why was this? Did it have something to do with the fact that war was never declared? There was something called the DMZ. Was the US not allowed to cross this line(on the ground)? >>> If I am not mistaken, when the French was about to withdraw from Vietnam, the United States offered them nuclear weapon to use against the VietMinh. After the Geneva convention signed in 1954 which partitioned Vietnam into north and south at the 17th parallel, the united states under the administration of Eisenhower was prepared to invade North Vietnam with its huge naval present at sea, but it needed some kind of international support to avoid being called a war monger. So the United States went to its nato allies asking for support, none of them said yes. The United States went to its closest ally, great Britain just like it did in the war in iraq to ask for support. Great Britain's prime minister said no.("Vietnam:A History" By andrew karnow) So, the invasion did not take place, but sort of. Because the united states wanted to go to war so bad because it was the only war we got, so a mini war called subversion of north Vietnam was created just right after the Geneva Convention of 1954. What the united states did was pumping up the south Vietnamese army, which was none existence before 1954 with arms and money. The united states trained south Vietnamese commando how to sabotage north vietnam factory, oil field and army base. From 1954-1964, U.S navy assisted and landed many of these commando into north Vietnam to carry out such subversions. Most of these subversions failed, and in the end, in 1964 helped to contribute to wider the conflict with an incident with north Vietnam's torpedo boat that resulted in the gulf of tonkin resolution. And what an incredible irony it was. Just a year before 1954, 1953 it was in the height of the McCarthy Era which senator Josepth McCarthy went on a witch hunt accusing hundreds and hundreds of people of communist subversion in the united states. The only true communist subversion he found was the Rosenberg family with later found was soviet's spy. However, hundreds and hundreds of government employees, actors and actress in hollywood, whose lives were completly destroyed because of McCarthy witch hunt. The best and most recent movie to depict the McCarthy era is "The Majestic" available at your local block buster store or library. And just one year after 1953, the United States was doing the same kind of subversion as it accussed the communist doing on a far away country we called Vietnam. don't we love history? |

What the united states did was pumping > up the south Vietnamese army, which was none existence before 1954 with arms > and money. Look up the list of units fighting for the French prior to 1954 and try figuring out which are French and which are native. Do you really think every soldier in Vietnam was a Vietminh? > And just > one year after 1953, the United States was doing the same kind of subversion > as it accussed the communist doing on a far away country we called Vietnam. > don't we love history? You obviously only love the delusions you call history. Al Zeller |
