Russian citizen detained on December 29 in the Northern Mariana Islands

Open source

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced the arrest of a Russian citizen in the United States. This is stated in the comments of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Foreign Ministry said that we are talking about a citizen of Russia, Dmitry Makarenko, who arrived on Saipan Island on December 29. He was detained by the FBI at the airport immediately after arrival.

"According to the information available, D. Makarenko is transferred from the Northern Mariana Islands to Florida. Our embassy in the USA continues to seek consular access to him, which, in accordance with the said Convention, should have been provided to us before January 2. We demand from Washington to clarify the reasons for the arrest and observe the rights of a citizen of Russia, "the statement said.

Earlier, the media reported that Dmitry Makarenko was detained at the request of the FBI. The Southern District Court of Florida on June 15, 2017 accused him of illegally importing US military equipment, as well as money laundering.

Personal note: I foresee a possible compromise or a swap for the American recently detained in Russia. As far as the Gal we have arrested - I'm not sure if she will be used as a tool or leverage to get our people back? But both sides are picking off spy's around the world which they are later imprisoned or used as tools to get each others people back? It's a game they've used for years. It all depends on whether or not they can justify a swap and who becomes more advantaged by getting them back? The other issue is we don't know if they worked for our side or theirs? But today countries around the world are watching everybody more closely and using their prisoner's as tools for trade. Just my thoughts!
