3RD infantry Going to Africa

Is heading for cape horn, in AFRICA. WTF. This has got to be on the top 10 list of dumb ass things to do with our military.
So when they get there, just what are they to do? Let people kill them is the thing that comes to my mind.
What is/are our military leaders thinking. Is there a Reason to this deployment?

The Africa Command would take over duties split among three of the military's five geographic commands, the European Command, Central Command and Pacific Command. Establishment of an Africa Command is done under presidential authority but members of Congress have been consulted in recent weeks.

Yesterday, Feb 3, 2007 it was announced that the 3rd ID (The old guard) would be the unit to go to the Horn of africa. And the 3rd ID commander said "the 3rd ID is first a fighting unit"

What is going on there that an entire US Infantry Division is needed there. Is there a site that states this.

The Horn of Africa is a tough spot with a significant Al Qaeda presence-camp/AO in Somalia and has had the UN backed Somali Government on the ropes. One guess is that neighboring Ethiopia is in a bad spot now and looking for some help and other neighboring countries are hollering out as well. So apparently Car 54 World Cop springs into action again and adds one more thing for Congress to fight about and demoralize the troops over.
Maybe enough is already enough. The congressional majority doesn't give a crap, so why should we get strung out any further.

Did a little research and found the 3rd Infantry Regiment will deploy one company to the Horn of Africa.

Let it happen first, then lets see what they did exactly, and then maybe we will also get a WHY.

JUst concerned that we might spread ourselves way to thin. We can barely meet our obligations in Iraq and Afghansitan. There is still the Pacific threater, in the past the Marines have been the majority of the ground forcers there, but the Marines are now also committed to Iraq and Afghaistan. The Army also has units in the Pacific theater also. North Korea is still a threat in that area. The 2nd Id is the only US combat ground unit in Korea. The ROK Army can pretty well handle its self now, but Korea is still a problem that could go off at any time.
