CEP Webinar: Topic: The Prospect For Peace In Afghanistan

(New York, N.Y./Berlin) – Ongoing negotiations between the Taliban and the Afghan government with support from the international community offer the prospect for stability in Afghanistan for the first time in nearly two decades. The talks could result in a significant reduction of the Taliban’s large-scale insurgency since the early 2000s. However, the country is still plagued by the operations of several international terrorist groups, some of which belong to the global network of al-Qaeda and others to ISIS.

This 90-minute webinar will look at the current security situation in Afghanistan, including the current status of the various terror groups still active in the country as well as questions on the impact a potential peace deal may have on the Taliban movement as a whole. Will its leadership be able to keep the movement together or will significant factions break away? How will the al-Qaeda and ISIS affiliates operating in Afghanistan attempt to disrupt and derail the road to stability?

In order to explore these issues, the Counter Extremism Project (CEP) is honored to welcome two of the most pertinent experts on this subject to the event:

Ambassador Edmund Fitton-Brown, the coordinator of the ISIL, Al-Qaida and Taliban Monitoring Team of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and Dr. Ellinor Zeino, the country representative of the German Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) in Kabul.

The event will be held in English via Zoom on the Friday, October 16, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. EDT / 15:00 CEST / 17:30 AFT

The agenda is as follows:

Dr. Hans-Jakob Schindler, senior director, CEP

Opening remarks and moderator

Ambassador Edmund Fitton-Brown, coordinator, ISIL, al-Qaida and Taliban Monitoring Team, UNSC

The current threat landscape in Afghanistan: international terror networks and the Taliban

Dr. Ellinor Zeino, country representative, Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Afghanistan

A view from the ground: current threat landscape in the capital

Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the issues with the speakers following their respective presentations in a Q&A segment. Please feel free to share this invitation with your colleagues and contacts.

O Almighty Lord God, who neither slumberest nor sleepest; Protect and assist, we beseech thee, all those who at home or abroad, by land, by sea, or in the air, are serving this country, that they, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore in all perils; and being filled with wisdom and girded with strength, may do their duty to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
