Default Stolen SSN's

I had to close my checking account at my bank and open a new one. There were charges on my account I didn't make that made me $200.00 over drawn. Their was also activity on my Equifax report that was not mine. I hope this was not a result of the compromise of the SSNs'. I made a police report, and also contacted the federal trade commission. I also furnished Equifax a copy of the police report nubmer.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune Robert and hope the damage control measures have been effective and that the perps get nailed. As you have already done, it?s prudent to assume your identity, including your SSN, is on the loose and among those the VA put on the street. Hopefully not, but worst case assumptions are sometimes best.

Just read this morning about a S.F Bay Area women who found out she had some 81 people using her SSN and is in the hole to the amount of $1 million. The initial investigation indicates the SSN was used mostly in Texas by presumed illegals and for the purpose of gaining employment and establishing bank accounts, credit cards, etc.

Although a young women and of modest means, she had not worked since 2000 so her SSN account would have been inactive but not in the deceased file, thus a prime number to be acquired and pedaled. Makes one wonder how that number got on the loose with such a remarkably marketable set of circumstances. Inside job or what?
But for some mysterious reason, that particular news article was poofed by AOL after just an hour or so. Could it be that some politico silk undies got soiled and phone calls made? The poll conducted with the article indicated that virtually 95 % of the respondents were really afraid of SSN theft and subsequent fraudulent use. Not exactly a vote of confidence, I?d say.

The pending Immigration bill has provisions requiring employer SSN validity checks but that is meeting very stiff opposition and most likely to get the axe. It?s amazing to find out that those things already assumed done, but not done, are ?bad for us? if they are done. Like, why is it bad for us is if somebody is not allowed to our SSN for fraudulent employment and other rip-off purposes? That convoluted logic will have to be explained to me, cuz I just don?t get it.
Maybe the ?Independent? Harry Reid can sort this out for me; he?s always good for a long strip of excrement disguised as ambrosia.

Keep us updated. I would like to know if they can catch who did it, and if it was related to "the great laptop heist".

My daughter has been going through that. Some gal in New York had her license number, s.s. number and was running up charges in New York. She was never there nor can she do anything about those charges. I had to get a lawyer for her to put some sort of issuance into the system making them aware of her Identity theft but her credit is screwed now and it will take much to undo what has been done.
