Art,
I"ve made several calls to some folks I know who said they couldn't figure out how this score was rated? Currrently they get 40 rounds and they are based on that number of hits out of 40. 142 seems like a high number but no one can relate to the scoring factors used back then. I will check around with some of the guys I know and let's see what we can find out. Otherwise you will have to come up with more data other than a number? Sorry.

The score 142 was not fast firing, I don't remember the distance but it was a long way. They would pull up a large target , I would guess it was 8 or 10 foot square. They had a long stick with\a cicle at end and wood push the circie to the spot on the target that was hit. Thiis firing range was a 3 hour march from Miami Beach to what we called "TENT CITY" in1943.

Cadet...
Not sure,...since it has been a long time since qualifying 3 times with an M-1 Garand at 1,2,3, and 500 yards, as an Expert.
Think that any score below 140 wasn't good enough to get one the lowest possible qualification of: Marksman. Also think that over 170 qualified one as a: Sharpshooter. Again not sure. But, think over 190 made you an: Expert. "A Possible" is 250, which I will never forget since getting lucky once and firing; "A Possible" and/or 250. I guess it was that good German Beer keeping me very loose and never flinching, which made such possible? Though, and good beer aside,...not bad shooting for someone born wearing glasses. Neil :cl: P.S. I would swear by that weapon and/or any weapon that would permit me to hit a pin point on a postage stamp (that's what A Bull looks like at 500 yards with a peep sight) EVERY TIME, even though firing only 8 rounds at 500 yards per qualification. |

Neil hit it right, again...
I qualified 184 on M-1 carbine (first time I had ever fired any kind of weapon), 6 short of Expert. 170 was Sharpshooter. I believe, on this score, I had selected the exact wrong branch to join. |
