Shock unity: Rand Paul, Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Mike Lee, herald Trump’s Syria withdrawal

In a positive, and also shocking display of unity, some of Congress’ most liberal and conservative firebrands have joined to herald President Trump’s withdrawal of troops from Syria.

In a letter to the president being released Wednesday, conservative Sens. Rand Paul and Mike Lee joined with liberals including new Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez , Ilhan Omar, Ro Khanna and Ted Lieu, to praise the presidential decision to slash three quarters of the 2,000 U.S. troops in Syria.

“We write in support of your announcement to the start of a ‘deliberate withdrawal’ of U.S. military forces in Syria, and we welcome the completion of this process within the next six months,” they wrote.

The letter also called on the elevation of diplomacy “to ensure minimal disruption and prevent needless loss of life.”

And it suggested that Trump’s move could be a model for withdrawing troops in Afghanistan, a hot button issue that has drawn scorn from some conservatives.

“It is long past time to rein in the use of force that goes beyond congressional authorization, and we look forward to pursuing this long standing bipartisan objective with your administration. Finally, we hope this will serve as a model for ending hostilities in the future -- in particular, as you and you administration seek a political solution to our involvement in Afghanistan,” the letter concluded.

Leaders of the House Congressional Progressive Caucus were signers, including Khanna, the first vice chair. Omar is the group’s whip.

Trump has announced that he will withdrawal all but 400 of 2,000 troops in Syria soon. Reports indicate that the military wants the 400 there to keep an eye on Iran’s influence in the war-torn nation.

The letter displayed how bringing home troops can unite liberals, conservatives and libertarians who feel U.S. involvement in overseas actions has gone on too long.

Paul said told reporters, “There is bipartisan support” for the president’s move, as the letter shows. He added, “There's a bipartisan movement to have Congress decide when we go to war.”

Citing the signers, Paul suggested that there could be a bipartisan caucus growing to push for troop withdrawals and promote Congress constitutional role in declaring war. “It’s a good mix showing that right and left can come together,” he said.

Khanna added, “The president cannot pursue a foreign policy agenda without the advice and consent, let alone the support, of the Congress. Thanks to Sen. Paul for joining me in bringing an end to these wars . The Constitution isn’t partisan.”

On Tuesday, the Kentucky Republican and Colorado Democratic Sen. Tom Udall together spoke at a conference on the War Powers Act and said that there are unity opportunities on foreign issues.

“Foreign policy is one of those areas,” said Paul. Udall agreed, and pointed to legislation pushing for troop withdrawal from Afghanistan as an example.
