A Jackson, Tennessee, native and 2013 homeschool graduate is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the guided-missile destroyer, the USS Hopper.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Brittany Craigie is a sonar technician (surface) aboard the guided-missile destroyer operating out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

A Navy sonar technician (surface) is responsible for detecting anything underwater in the vicinity of the ship, to include submarines, that may cause a threat.

“My dad and mom always raised me to be a really hard worker, to listen and learn, and keep my ears and eyes open,” said Craigie. “I credit them for my work ethic. In the Navy, I am always looking for more to do. Once I am done with my tasks, I am always looking for extra things to do.”

More than 300 sailors serve aboard the ship, and their jobs are highly specialized, requiring dedication and skill, according to Navy officials. The jobs range from maintaining engines to handling weaponry along with a multitude of other assignments that keep the ship mission-ready at all times.

Fast, maneuverable, and technically advanced, destroyers provide credible combat power, at and from the sea.

“Our sailors in Pearl Harbor are doing an excellent job at warfighting and supporting the warfighter,” said Cmdr. Hurd, chief staff officer, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. “Historically, Pearl Harbor is a symbolic base of sacrifice and resiliency. Today, on every Navy ship and shore facility’s flagpole, the First Navy Jack, ‘Don’t Tread on Me,’ flies reminding sailors to move forward and build on the history and legacy of this country and the U.S. Navy.”

Navy guided-missile destroyers are multi-mission ships that can operate independently or as part of a larger group of ships at sea, Navy officials explained. They are equipped with tomahawk missiles, torpedoes, guns and a phalanx close-in weapons system.

Challenging living conditions build strong fellowship among the crew. Motivated, the crew can quickly adapt to changing conditions. It is a busy life of specialized work, watches and drills. Serving aboard a guided-missile destroyer instills accountability and toughness and fosters initiative and integrity.

Serving in the Navy is a continuing tradition of military service for Craigie, who has military ties with family members who have previously served. Craigie is honored to carry on that family tradition.

“I have some cousins and an uncle who have served in the military,” Craigie said. “I was raised with a strong sense of pride and respect for the military. I didn’t want to go the college route because I really didn’t think that it was for me. I looked to the Navy to offer me a way to do my own things and start my life.”

Craigie is also proud of earning a Navy Achievement Award in 2017 while on temporary assigned duty working with culinary specialists.

“The ship hosted two receptions while in Sri Lanka and Australia. There I played a key part in making sure the events were successful,” Craigie said. “I was surprised to receive the award, but it was nice to be recognized for the work I had done.”

As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied-upon assets, Craigie and other sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes, providing the Navy the nation needs.

“Serving means working towards a future,” added Craigie. “I want to make sure that future generations look at the military as being worthy of respect and pride.”
