Lawmakers join Secretary of the Army Mark T. Esper (3rd from left), Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley and Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel A. Dailey (right) in cutting a cake in honor of the Army's 244th birthday during a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol June 12.

There are a lot of candles on the U.S. Army’s birthday cake today.

The Army is celebrating its 244th birthday June 14, marking the date in 1775 when the Second Continental Congress formed the Continental Army under the command of General George Washington to unite the 13 colonies in their fight against British forces.

"We were born as the result of the United States Congress,” Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley said. “The United States Army could not be the most powerful army in the world … without all the great support that we get from the Senate and the House.”

Today’s Army has a uniformed force of about 1 million with some 180,000 soldiers deployed in more than 140 countries at any given time.

Among other events, the day will be marked with senior Army leaders laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. The Army’s birthday is marked with celebrations, military balls and traditional cake cutting ceremonies held at military bases and communities across the country and at overseas installations.

Interesting Army facts:

1. During World War II, supporting one soldier on the battlefield took one gallon of fuel per day. Today, the Army uses more than 22 gallons per day, per soldier.

2. The Army has 158 installations worldwide; more than 132,000 miles of infrastructure for electric, gas, sewer and water; and over one billion square feet of office space.

3. The Army owns more than 15 million acres of land across the United States, or about 24,000 square miles which, if the Army was a state, it would be the 42nd largest.

4. Twenty-four U.S Presidents served in the United States Army

5. The U.S Army is the second largest employer in the U.S

O Almighty Lord God, who neither slumberest nor sleepest; Protect and assist, we beseech thee, all those who at home or abroad, by land, by sea, or in the air, are serving this country, that they, being armed with thy defence, may be preserved evermore in all perils; and being filled with wisdom and girded with strength, may do their duty to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
