12-11-2018 08:47 AM The fight against militants in Sinai has gone on for years, but the insurgency gathered steam after the 2013 ouster of former President Mohammed Morsi, an Islamist with the Muslim Brotherhood. Authorities have since shut down almost all underground tunnels that they suspected militants used to smuggle fighters and weapons into Sinai from neighboring Gaza, ruled by the Islamist Hamas group since 2007.
