Iran Preparing For War? Hormuz-2 Ballistic Missile Successfully Test-Fired

Iranís elite revolutionary guards have successfully test-fired a domestically built ballistic missile as tensions escalate between Tehran and Washington, according to a report published Thursday.

The Hormuz-2 ballistic missile destroyed a floating target from a distance of over 150 miles in the test carried out by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) forces, Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh of the IRGC said in a speech, Iranís state-run Tasnim News Agency reported.

Similar to the Khalij-e-Fars (Persian Gulf) ballistic missile in appearance, the Hormuz-2 is also a naval ballistic missile that is capable of hitting floating targets from a range of 300 kilometers with high accuracy.

Iran also recently tested a S-300 surface-to-air missile defense system, which it acquired from Russia, days after Iranian boats forced the USNS Invincible, accompanied by three British Royal Navy ships, to change its course by sailing within 600 yards of the naval ship, according to U.S. officials.

The Islamic Republic also tested a Khorramshahr medium-range ballistic missile in January, facing flak from many in the West who claimed that it was in violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution. The country, however, countered by saying that the tests were within the resolutionís boundaries as they were not designed to carry a nuclear warhead.

In the face of escalating tensions, Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Hossein Dehqan Monday said that Iranís military is capable of surprising enemies if struck. However, the country maintains that its defense program is based entirely on deterrence and does not intend on posing a threat to any country in the region.

President Donald Trump has taken a strong stand against Iranís missile tests, imposing new economic sanctions on the Middle-Eastern country after the January test, on Feb.3. In a post on Twitter the same day, the president wrote, ď Iran is playing with fire ó they don't appreciate how Ďkindí President [Barack] Obama was to them. Not me!Ē

Iran Preparing For War? Tehran Successfully Tests Russian S-300 Missile System During Drills
BY PRANSHU RATHI @PRANSHURATHI ON 03/04/17 AT 7:58 AM
RE: http://www.ibtimes.com/iran-preparin...during-2502404

Iran's military has reportedly conducted successful tests of Russian purchased S-300 anti-aircraft missile system. The news comes amid ongoing tensions between Tehran and Washington, and soon after President Donald Trump's pledge to get tough with Iran.

Tests on effectiveness of the missile system against ballistic threats were conducted by Iran in its drill dubbed Damvand. The drill was reportedly attended by a number of high-ranking military commanders and officials.

The S-300 system was evaluated through simulated electronic warfare conditions and tested for its detection, identification, interception and target shooting capabilities, the Tasnim news agency reported Saturday.

The deal for five Russian S-300 systems was struck in 2007 but was later suspended after the adoption of U.N. Security Council sanctions on Iran in mid-2010. Tehran eventually reached an international agreement in 2015 and vowed to limit its nuclear development program in exchange for the removal of crippling economic sanctions

It was around this time, in April 2015, that Russia resumed talks with Iran on deliveries of the S-300, and in December 2016, Iran's ambassador in Moscow Mehdi Sanayee confirmed that Russia had executed the contract.

However, last month, after Iran conducted a ballistic missile test, Trump warned Tehran that it had been “put on notice.” In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that Iran would not attack first, but would defend itself if provoked.

Iran made news again recently after the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence said in a report that Iran is seeking to purchase weapons such as surface warships, submarines, and anti-ship missiles in 2020 after the expiration of a U.N. arms embargo.

It was also reported on Tuesday that Iran has been conducting a series of massive naval drills in nearby national and international waters since early February. The navy drills included a successful launch of a new advanced Torpedo
