Pig
One of my back seat guys was asking me some questons about VN, While I was Lieing, I mean telling him what he wanted to know, I said the word pig, refuring to the M-60 machine gun of course, He said what is a pig, I told him, Latter that day on the way to a house fire I told him to bring the pig, (large diamiter hose line) and it stuck, Now he goes around telling people to "bring up the pig" Military slang works in the fire service as well.

Name
Don't know, guess its like all other names the GIs think up, Pig eats a lot, M-60 eats alot, Blooper is the sound a M-79 makes only its more like BLUUP. Rock-and -Roll- never actually heard this one but it refured to full auto , Cheery/fresh meat/ meat/FNG all refured to the new guy, and so on.

60s
I?ve heard it called a pig. It was not an expression that caught on in our unit. A Marine friend told me he called it a pig as a put down, due to it?s being heavy and harder to hump, in a leg unit and it did draw a lot of attention in a fire fight. A guy who was there in the 70?s told me they jammed a lot, something I didn?t experience. No doubt there were 15 other reasons, both good and bad why it got the nickname.
I called mine Birth Control. Had the name painted in drab blue letters on the stock. On one of my assault bags wrote the words, Birth Control Pills. It used to freak out the FNG?s. Stay healthy, Andy |

When we were on foot the guy who carried the 60 cut the flash suppressor off and it shot out a 3ft flame. Told him it would attract fire and he said he didn't care , it was cool. Ah , to be 18 again with an automatic weapon and free ammo. Bobby made it home and we talk now

Ive already told this but its still cool and like I did it yesterday.
I --at 19 years old-- pulled the trigger on a 60 with a 1500 round belt and didn't let up until it went CLICK. AUUUUUSOME. That thing was so hot. Ron |

An excellent machine gun. Heavy rascal but reliable . ( I was a rifleman) . I remember one cracked bolt only.
There was some trouble in 66 in burning out barrels and chopper gunners gave machine section chrome lined barrels as I remember . |
