Police in Central Vietnam discover 3,000 detonators on bus

HANOI, Vietnam - Police in a central province discovered 3,000 detonators and six rolls of explosive wires inside baggage on a bus bound for Ho Chi Minh City, police said Monday.

The devices were found by traffic police in Quang Nam province during a regular check Wednesday, said a police officer in Quang Nam province, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Police said the explosive devices were to be resold to fisherman for dynamite fishing, and there was no indication of foul play.

Bus driver Ho Ngoc Lien was briefly detained for questioning, the officer said, adding police were still trying to pinpoint who brought the detonators aboard the bus, which was loaded with more 40 passengers.

In May 2003, gunpowder exploded inside a bus in a northern province, killing 46 people and injuring dozens of others. Since then, the government has taken steps to crack down on the illegal transport of explosives.

Illegal producing, possessing, trafficking or trading of explosives carries a jail term from one year to life in prison.
