Hackensack student designs NJ's entry for White House Easter Egg Roll

A senior at Hackensack High School designed the graphic for an egg that will represent the state Monday at the annual White House Egg Roll event.

Ahmed El Gazzar, of Hackensack, designed the graphic for New Jersey's 2019 entry.

"We are always proud of the students who submit imaginative entries each year," New Jersey Education Commissioner Lamont O. Repollet said in a release, "and this year Ahmed is certainly making his hometown proud."

Abraham Lincoln is believed to have loosely founded the tradition on the capitol lawn. But the egg roll was made an official event by President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878 when he relocated the event to the White House lawn, according to the White House's website.

Each year, children under 13 are invited to the White House lawn to push eggs with spoons in a competitive race. The event is hosted by the first lady the day after Easter and includes a myriad of festivities beyond the egg roll itself.

Leading up to the event, the U.S. Department of Education invites students nationwide to submit designs for eggs that will be displayed to represent all 50 states and are asked to include iconography such as their state's flower or bird.

Gazzar's design features the state silhouette set amidst a tree and a field of yellow goldfinches, the state bird of New Jersey.
