Britain had to rely on US and Canadian warplanes to monitor a Russian carrier in the Channel last month.

RAF fighters shadowed the Admiral Kuznetsov and her escorts. But Britain has had no maritime patrol aircraft since the Nimrod fleet was axed in 2010.

An order for nine US Poseidon P8 planes has not been placed yet.
