PANAGYURISHTE, (BM) – Your briefly report on July 22 in last twelve hours from BulgarianMilitary.com:

China strikes secret deal to allow armed forces at Cambodian naval base – WSJ

China will be able to place armed forces at a Cambodian naval base under a secret agreement the two nations have reached, Reuters reported.

The agreement, reached this spring but not made public, gives China exclusive access to part of Cambodia’s Ream Naval Base on the Gulf of Thailand, reported the Journal, citing U.S. and allied officials familiar with the matter.

Such an arrangement would give China an enhanced ability to assert contested territorial claims and economic interests in the South China Sea, challenging U.S. allies in Southeast Asia. Chinese and Cambodian officials denied such an agreement existed, according to the Journal.

In a statement, the State Department urged Cambodia to reject such an arrangement, saying the nation had a “constitutional commitment to its people to pursue an independent foreign policy.”

Saudi Arabia urges global action against Iran after UK tanker seized

Saudi Arabia on Sunday slammed Iran’s seizure of a British-flagged tanker in sensitive Gulf waters as “completely unacceptable” and urged world powers to “take actions to deter such behavior”, The Times of Israel reported.

“Any attack on the freedom of navigation is a violation of international law,” Saudi minister of state for foreign affairs Adel al-Jubeir wrote on Twitter.

“Iran must realize that its acts of intercepting ships, including most recently the British ship, are completely unacceptable.”

Oman called on Iran earlier Sunday to release the Stena Impero, which was impounded with its 23 crew members at the port of Bandar Abbas after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps seized it in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday.

The Gulf state, which unlike Saudi Arabia maintains strong ties with Iran, urged London and Tehran to resolve their dispute through diplomacy.

Oman “looks forward to the Iranian government’s release of the British ship,” the foreign ministry said on Twitter.

It called on the Islamic Republic and the United Kingdom “to resolve their differences through diplomatic channels.”

Observatory: Air strikes kill 18 in Syria’s Idlib

Airstrikes killed at least 18 people, including seven children, in rebel-held Idlib region in northwestern Syria on Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Reuters says, MEMO reported.

The northwest is the last major foothold of the rebellion against President Bashar al-Assad, who has vowed to recover the whole country but has made little or no gains in more than two months of military operations in the area.

State media also said that a train carrying phosphate in central Syria was derailed by a bomb blast east of Palmyra, causing injuries among the crew. It did not identify the perpetrators. Daesh is still active in that area.

In the northwest, the Observatory said Syrian government airstrikes killed 12 people, including five children, in the village of Urum al-Jawz in western Idlib province. Four more people, including two children, were killed in strikes on Kfarouma in the south of the province.

A Russian airstrike killed a civil defence volunteer in the town of Khan Sheikhoun, the Observatory said.

The civil defence, also known as the White Helmets, identified him as Anas al-Diab, a volunteer and media activist it said was killed while documenting the airstrikes.
