The Ardennes (Belgium): December, 1944
In December, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, entire US units, including an armored division, were retreating from the surprise German offensive in the Ardennes Forest when a sergeant in a tank destroyer spotted an American soldier trying to dig a foxhole in the frozen earth.
"Hey, Buddy!", yelled the sergeant, "Are you crazy? The Krauts have broken out! We're being overrun!" The soldier, a PFC with the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, stopped digging and looked up. "You looking for a safe place?", he asked. "Yeah!" answered the tanker. "Well, Mac," the PFC drawled, "just pull your vehicle in behind me...I'm the 82nd Airborne, and this is as far as the bastards are going." This post is dedicated to all U.S. veterans of Christmasses past. |

Rigger
Met a man from the 82nd Gliders (airborne without a parachute) is what he calls himself.
Swears this story is true. And also he says the Germans never got beyond that point. He was there and I wasn't. No one ever tells us what the tank driver did? :cd: Have always loved that story. Keith |
