Default Ocean Critters

A couple of weekends ago Kath and I went on a whale watching cruise out of Monterey Bay near Ft. Ord. It was a little hazy, but still a pleasant day. The boat we went on was a 100 footer and held quite a few people. A marine biologist is on the loud speaker giving a narration about the layout of the ocean floor and the animals that live and feed there.

Monterey Bay is home to many seals, sea lions, harbor seals, the occasional elephant seal, and sea otters, not to mention the many sea birds.

This is a seal basking in the sun on a bouy inside the harbor.

As we pass the breakwater we get a close look at the cormorants. These are long necked diving birds. It's their breeding season now and we could see many of the males doing a goofy dance to impress the females.

Here's a close-up of one "running on water" to take off.

As we head out to open water, the marine biologist is telling us about an underwater trough thats about 30mi. long, 3mi. wide, and a mile deep. Many species of fish and marine mammals come here to feed, including migrating gray and blue whales, dolphins, several species of seals and sea lions, and orcas [killer whales] that follow the seal herds and a shot at a baby whale or a sick adult.

For all you golfers, this is a shot of part of Pebble Beach from the water.

As we get more out on open water and pick up speed, it gets windier on the bow and the swells get bigger. Spray starts to come over the bow at times. Kath gets to feeling a little queesy, and spends alot of the time sitting on one of the benches on the side of the cabin.

We soon see the first of three whales that we will see that day. Unfortunately, this is the only good picture we got. The others were too far away.
