Bryce Canyon, Ut
This is where Kath and I spent Christmas. We left the Bay Area in the afternoon of the 19DEC, driving East. We spent the weekend in SLC, UT with some friends and got to Bryce on Monday. We spent 7 days there staying at Ruby's Inn, a large motel about a mile from the park entrance with all of the amenities. It's a great place in the winter with no crowds, and the price is right [$39]. 23DEC was our anniversary [#36], and we couldn't have picked a more beautiful place to spend it.

RED CANYON
Before you get to Ruby's Inn you pass through Red Canyon. It's a beautiful drive of about 3 miles with great rock formations of the red rock that the canyon is named for. The road passes through 2 natural tunnels.

EVEN THOUGH
Ruby's Inn is at about 7600' elevation, they hadn't had much snow for awhile. That was okay. It made for some easy driving and some beautiful 100 mile panoramas.

YOU CAN
drive to places in the park that is over 9000' elevation. This makes Bryce one of the cooler parks in the state in the summer. It's an excellent year-round destination.

THERE'S ONE
main road in the park with several side roads that takes you out to the rim of the canyon where there are over-looks.

YOU CAN
hike down into the canyon from most of the over-looks. They have beautifully maintained trails. You can hike down and back up from where you started, or from one lookout area to another. Some are harder than others, but none of them are absolutely easy. Mostly because of the altitude. The difficulty can be deceiving.

THE SECOND DAY
there the weather changed. It got quite cloudy. Higher up in the park really got socked in, so I decided to go on a hike in it with the camera. It was a totally different world, and I had it pretty much all to myself.

THE WEATHER-CHANGE
brought over a foot of new snow, adding to the already beautiful scenery.
