Smile Here ya go, Andy!

Lillian Gish

This is a still from her 1919 film "Broken Blossoms".

Yep, she was a hottie back in the silent film days.

Who do ya think was better lookin'....Lillian or Lizzie?

I was serious about liking Lillian. Years ago took a Film History course at Zoo of Mass. Did sort of a compare and contrast paper on Lillian and Clara Bow.

Lizzie, as you know, was not a pretty woman. Besides, as you know, she liked girls.

Stay healthy,
Andy

Andy,

What's wrong with liking girls. I love 'em! Unfortunately, so did my ex-wife.

Talking

You nailed that ugly thing Bob. Remember when we first walked into the Outhouse Saloon and the bartender told Sid and I we would have to keep our dog in the truck ?

Andy,

I was not making fun of Lillian. Comparing photos of her contemporaries, she was WAY out in front of most of them.
Did you know that she lived to be 100 years old?

I have seen one or two photos of Lizzie taken when she was in her teens in which she was not bad looking. Can't say that for the later years, though.

Would be interested in knowing what you found out in your study of Lillian and Clara Bow. I know only that she was known as Hollywood's "It" girl.

Clara Bow

Cool Bow

What did I write in a college paper around 1975? How the hell would I know?

According to the Hollywood types, critics and all, Lillian was the greatest actress of her time. She was supposed to be able to express any emotion with just a movement of the eye brow or curl of the lip.

Clara Bow was indeed the "IT" girl. She had "It", she liked "it", she wanted "it" and she got "it". She was more like a Brigitte Bardot of her day.

Clara was really interested in large strong young men. She often went to football games and would would return home with one, or more. One of these guys really impressed her and she got him some jobs at her studio. The guy went on to have a fairly good career himself, he came to be known as John Wayne.

If your interested in that sort thing I'd suggest you read "Hollywood Babylon". There are plenty of good books on silent movie stars but that one takes Hollywood from the beginning to at least the 80s.

Hey Bob, you don't have that much in common with Lizzie. You could never beat a murder charge by saying the spot of blood on your shoe was a result of your being on your period. We all know you've had your change of life.

Stay healthy,
Andy

Hollywood Babylon

I remember reading that a long time ago...back in the seventies or eighties, I think.

I seem to recall that the focus of the book was on Hollywood's scandals through the years...the Fatty Arbuckle murder trial, Thelma Todd, the rompings of Errol Flynn with underage girls...all the bad stuff.

It was definitely a good read.

Back when Lillian Gish was the top actress, weren't all the movies silent? If so, she had to be good since she couldn't speak, or at least be heard.

And Clara Bow was hot!
