Exclamation I think calling off the SK war games is a mistake

NK will take this as a sign of weakness as will the allies. These war games act as a deterrent
and shows them that unless things change -the outcome will look grim for NK. Stopping these war games suddenly makes KIM look good and that he got the US to halt their US their war games - which makes us look weak and him stronger to his people.

US-South Korea Military Drills Suspension Announcement Surprised Seoul, Welcomed By Russia, China
By Pritha Paul @ZiggyZina143 - 06/13/18 AT 5:10 AM
RE: http://www.ibtimes.com/us-south-kore...lcomed-2690323

A comment made by President Donald Trump in the passing during a press conference, following the historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Monday, left South Korea’s department of defense disheveled.

Without any prior warning, Trump announced he will be suspending the annual U.S.-South Korean military drills and move forward with the plan to remove the 28,500 American troops stationed in Seoul.

“I want to bring our soldiers back home,” Trump said, adding that it was “not part of the equation right now.” Next he said: “We will be stopping the war games, which will save us a tremendous amount of money unless and until we see the future negotiation is not going along like it should. But we’ll be saving a tremendous amount of money. Plus, I think it’s very provocative.”

The POTUS’ remarks came as a big surprise to South Korea, which said on Tuesday that Washington has not reached out to them to discuss halting the military drills.

“At this current point, there is a need to discern the exact meaning and intent of President Trump’s comments,” Seoul’s Defense Ministry said, Twin Cities Pioneer Press reported.

However, at the same time, the executive office of South Korean President Moon Jae-in told their state media outlet Yonhap News that the suspension of joint military drills may be a necessary step in urging North Korea to enter denuclearization talks.

Also, the U.S. forces stationed at South Korea admitted that Department of Defense or the Indo-Pacific Command had given them “no updated guidance on the execution or cessation of training exercises” and hence will continue to coordinate with their Seoul counterparts and maintain their current positions until further notice.

Trump’s primary reason for suspending the war games was that it drained money, although he provided no estimate of the expenditure – a decision that has got mixed reactions from America’s political allies around the globe.

Japan’s Minister of Defence Itsunori Onodera told reporters Wednesday that joint military exercises were “vital” for East Asian security and hence should not be suspended.

“We would like to seek an understanding of this between Japan, the U.S. and South Korea,” he said, Reuters reported.

On the other hand, Russia and China, who joined North Korea in criticizing the joint military drills in the past, welcomed Trump's decision. In fact, the Chinese foreign ministry hinted before Trump’s press conference that it knew about the president’s decision in advance.

“Our suspension for suspension process is right and has been realized," a spokesperson for the ministry stated, a BBC correspondent in China reported.

Similar sentiments were echoed by the Russian foreign ministry on Tuesday.

"We welcome the negotiations of chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump," the Ministry said in a statement. “We assess positively the statement of US president after the meeting saying that it was inappropriate to hold military exercises during the negotiations. We are convinced that the cessation of provocative actions is a necessary step towards decreasing tensions on the peninsula and establishing an atmosphere of trust there.”

Trump no doubt thinks that removing the war games saves money this money can be used to build his wall. Allies aren't sure of his decision making processes.

Boats,
Who knows whether that: "Calling off the SK war games is a mistake", or not.
We're going down a new and unknown path never traveled before.

I wish US (both ways) as much good luck as possible, while dealing with North Korean Enemy.

Regardless, if turns out that NK isn't dealing in good faith (their longtime norm) and they do their usual Waltzing of the Free World or West and America around,...America can QUITE RIGHTFULLY, EASILY & QUICKLY re-cock its QUITE DEADLY HAMMER.

Nowadays, Obama is no longer quite weirdly enemy placating (his norm) calling-the-shots.

Thank God for that.

Obama is not the president - Trump is & his actions of late are disturbing. He's not a King nor does he truly appreciate any advice by the military support officials prior to his decision making processes. One day he will make a mistake and he will blame the end results on everyone else but himself! His majesty is nothing but a self-glorification individual which is overwhelmingly seen by all the people's around the world. He's not Lord Almighty - he's arrogant and self-centered. He's not working within the framework of the established government.

Neil - I know you & HC and many others - support Trump and we all know you will take his side on all Trump issues - but only the God Almighty will no the end results of this mans term in office. For one man to make such hasty decisions without conferring with Congress or the Military - cannot go on - not without some awful ramifications downstream of his decisions.

Arrow Suspending Military Exercises in S. Korea Carries Risks

Suspending Military Exercises in S. Korea Carries Risks
By Thomas Spoehr | June 13, 2018 | 11:34 AM EDT
RE: https://www.cnsnews.com/commentary/t...-carries-risks

Only a few tangible outcomes emerged from the Singapore summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. One of those was Trump’s announcement that “we will be stopping the war games, which will save us a tremendous amount of money.”

Trump went on to add that the games will be halted “unless or until we see the future negotiation is not going along as it should.”

Left unsaid was exactly which “war games” the president is referring to. Most believe that the large, annual joint military exercises regularly conducted between the U.S. and South Korean military forces fall under that definition.

Ulchi Focus Guardian, one such exercise, normally takes place in the fall and last year involved a total of around 20,000 U.S. personnel, either already in South Korea or arriving from off-peninsula to train with the South Koreans. Another such exercise, named Foal Eagle, normally takes place in the spring and involves a similar number of U.S. personnel.

But it was unclear whether the phrase “war games” also includes lower-level exercises, such as field training exercises by a U.S. battalion or squadron.

Ad Feedback

The large joint exercises ensure that U.S. and South Korean forces, as well as select allied forces who are part of the United Nations Command, are able to work seamlessly together to defend South Korea from attack. These are necessary to ensure the interoperability and integration of operations.

Wartime plans for the defense of South Korea combine air, ground, and sea forces of multiple nations, and as such, periodic exercises are necessary to ensure readiness and preparedness.

Suspending these large joint exercises for an extended period of time, particularly for more than six months, could erode the readiness of U.S. and South Korean forces to successfully work together to defend South Korea. If the president’s use of the term “war games” is applied more expansively and encompasses lower-level exercises, the negative impact on readiness will be more immediate and severe.

North Korea has traditionally objected to the large joint exercises and has in the past expressed its displeasure by launching ballistic missiles or issuing blistering communiques. Although these exercises are strictly defensive in nature, North Korea has referred to them as “dress rehearsals” for an invasion.

Because ceasing these exercises would erode the U.S. and South Korea’s ability to defend the peninsula, The Heritage Foundation has consistently recommended that the U.S. not accede to North Korean demands to cancel them unless the north shows more tangible signs of seriousness in seeking peace and stability.

The financial cost of these exercises is simply the price the U.S. must pay to defend its global national interests. The South Koreans pay their share of the exercise costs.

There is more to learn about the president’s agreement with Kim, and it would be premature to read too much into it. But canceling military exercises before North Korea has taken any concrete steps to demonstrate its intentions would be troubling.

Personal note:

This posting proves my point. Why give NK a gift when you got nothing back from them up to this point? Saving a buck isn't the issue - a live show of strength is the only thing NK has respect for. Tossing them a bone before they've done anything to prove themselves isn't what I call a square deal. They fear us and they should, and to take that fear away opens a Pandora's Box thinking that the US is weak! Wrong signal to send Mr. President. Those military exercises give a live picture of what would happen to NK - if they continue with their BS and nuclear activities. It also makes our alias think we are weak and would back down from such a scum bag as Kim! Saving Money? What a joke - him sitting on his presidential throne and calling shots before really knowing what's going on or even discussing his decision to stop our US military exercises with our alias! I hope he never washes his hand that he shook with KIM - as a reminder - if things go bad?

Boats,
Whether I, HC and many others support America's Commander-In-Chief & President Trump, and you and many others obviously despise and fanatically hate America's Commander-In-Chief or President Trump and actually hope that HE FAILS AT EVERYTHING,...is irrelevant.

My previously stating: "Who knows whether that: "Calling off the SK war games is a mistake", or not. We're going down a new and unknown path never traveled before." doesn't support anyone or anything else other than America.

Whereas you seem like one of those typical: "Trump Haters" (as seen on TV), even hoping that The President fails when discussing and dealing with NUCLEAR matters effecting ALL Americans.

Go figure?
