Default TARGET: Berlin....... This was the day we made history for the Air Force.

Mission No 10
March 6, 1944
Berlin, Germany

The target was a ball bearing plant. We were at an altitude of 23,000 ft and it was 55 degrees below zero. We had a lot of flak coming at us. They are supposed to have 400 guns there. We could see all of Germany going over and back. When we dropped our bombs on Berlin, I could see the buildings blow all apart. I saw 4 enemy fighters shot down by our escorts (P-51) and saw two of our B17?s shot down. This was the day we made history for the Air Force.

Mission No 11
March 8, 1944
Berlin, Germany

The target was a factory for JU88?s and HE177?s. We could see the city and the bombs hit. We were at an altitude of 22,000 ft and it was 50 degrees below zero. We had a lot of flak come up at us. The most that I have ever saw. We saw a lot of enemy fighters (ME109?s and FW190?s), but none came close to our plane. I could see all of the city and watched the bombs fly all over the place. We had two little holes in our ship from flak (in the wings).

Mission No 12
March 9, 1944
Berlin, Germany

The target was the city of Berlin. We were at an altitude of 23,500 ft and it was 40 degrees below zero. They shot a lot of flak at us. We could not see the city because of the clouds. We didn?t see any enemy fighters. We had P-38?s at the target for escorts.

Neal,
You are technically correct. However, that's what my father wrote in his diary. In actuality it was the "United States Army Air Force"
USAAF
