The South didn't lose, the Confederacy did.

My ancestors weren't there. They were busy on Stoneman's raids.

Originally posted by Paco James, just a Constitutional question. Since when and where is it illegal for a state to leave the "United States"? I've never had anyone been able to answer that. Please let me know chapter and verse. It's bugged me for years. Also, when SC left the Union, they told the foreigners to leave Ft. Sumpter, which we'll see together soon. They didn't and tried to re-enforce the fort, which didn't sit well with the new government. There was ample warning, and once you leave the Union, the Stars and Stripes was not their flag. Also, firing on the flag, is like burning it....freedom of speech, so to speak.

Unreconstructed Pack

Pack--The Civil War proved that this country isn't going to let states wander off and be independent, it settled that q. for all time.
Think not? try it again and see what happens. Go ahead--try an experiment for me--go down to the nearest federal installation and demand they haul down their flag--then start shooting. Tell em you don't want em in your state any more. I'm real curious to see what happens. I'll send you a cake with a file in it, promise.

Um there's some historical questions involved here. States don't own the land federal installations are on (Like Ft Sumpter) the federal government does. There never was a question about this untill the shooting started. So when the feds tried to reinforce the fort, they were only improving their own property and making sure their troops were supplied.

Also , shooting at the American flag is not "freedom of speech" (neither's burning it) if the flag is being held by an American soldier or if that shooting damages federal property or people. Again , try that experiment if you don't believe me.

But your statement proves my larger point--The Confederacy was NOT the US of A, it was something different. The war forced Southerners to be Americans again.
And I'm glad they are, specially people like you and Gimpy and others here.

Stay good
James

(Gimpy ol pal--You know I admire and defer to your judgement on frequent occasion but on this I'm afraid your grits are overly friccasseed. I gotta go along with Brice on this)

James,

See you soon and we'll walk together through the beautiful history and charm of Charleston. Have you got a place to stay there yet? I gotta email you some suggestions....will do today.

See you in a couple of weeks......even YOUR opinions are welcome in the Lowcountry!
