Thirty years after Vietnam, county wants to honor its dead
(EXCERPT) By Jim Cresson The idea for a memorial honoring Sussex County’s war dead from the Vietnam War is gaining big support from local and state veterans. State Vietnam Veterans Association President Bob Corsa, a retired New York City police officer who was a Marine Corps squad leader in Vietnam from 1969-70, first advanced the proposed memorial idea to Sussex County Administrator Bob Stickels in May. Stickels, who served as an Army military policeman in Vietnam from New Year’s Day to Christmas Day 1968, quickly embraced the idea and began forming a plan to raise money for a black granite podium-shaped memorial and place it on county land at the corner of South Bedford Street and The Circle. On the top of the podium would be inscribed the names of Sussex County’s 22 servicemen who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. “I think it is a great idea and one that is long overdue,” said Stickels. “Seven guys I went to high school with died over there. That’s something I will never forget, and Sussex County should never forget the sacrifice they made, either.” Thirty years after the last American combatants left Vietnam, t...
