Chimney Remains ID'd As Man Missing Since 1999

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Human remains found in the chimney of local Salvation Army Thrift Store last week were those of a 37-year-old man who was reported missing in 1999, the chief medical examiner's office said Wednesday.

The medical examiner's office, with help from an anthropologist, identified the skeleton as the remains of Archie Hinton Jr., whose last known address was on Infield Street in Bridgeport.

Authorities say Hinton may have been trying to break into the store, but the official cause of his death remained under investigation. Police said there were no signs of foul play.

Hinton had a criminal record that included a robbery conviction in Stamford in 1989 and charges of larceny, burglary and forgery in Camden, S.C., Bridgeport Detective Lt. James Viadero said.

Thrift store worker Garry Hollema called police last Thursday after he looked into a small chimney pipe and saw two leg bones hanging downward. A heating repairman said the chimney gets as hot as 500 degrees when the furnace is on.

Hinton's girlfriend reported him missing in March 1999.

Default Hmmm.....

I wonder if the Connecticut heaters are still running in March. Probably during night hours would be my guess. If so, stack gas probably finished off this particular ?Santa Perp? well before he got parched and turned into stack jerky or made an ash of himself. Yup, 500 F is a high but reasonable number for dehydration-jerky/ash makin. Excellent Darwin Award selection I?d say and ought to be good for a 1st place finish.
