These Chinese made fake MOH and other American valor awards and certificates are appearing in online eBay auctions.

They are being offered for $700, and a recent sale went for about $250.

In the field of militaria collecting, the SVA law which prohibits an American from owning an MOH has resulted in the only legitimate ones coming on the market being owned by foreigners, and this black market in faked ones.

The United States Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government. It is bestowed on a member of the United States armed forces who distinguishes himself " Conspicuously by gallant and intrepidity at the risk of his or her life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States" - because of the nature of its criteria, the medal is often awarded posthumously.

There are 4 main types of Medal of Honor's on the world collectable market today, which is only illegal for a citizen of the United States to buy, this law does not apply to collector's from the rest of the world, hence you constantly see the Medal of Honor for sale, mainly on German eBay and UK eBay, most of them being fakes made in Germany and China. We will get into the specifics in a minute.

There is the ultra scarce and un-obtainable named with the recipients name to reverse, as awarded to a veteran by the US Government. There are a few named originals in private collections around the world, the collector's value for a genuine named Medal of Honor would be around $250,000 to $300,000 USD.

The most common found in collections, classed as genuine 'illegal' version, is 1 out of the 300 Medal of Honor's made by HLI Lordship Industries Inc., a former Medal of Honor contractor to the United States Government, which was fined and lost their Government contract in 1996 for selling 300 Medal of Honor's through the back door for $75.USD each, the US Government calls these fakes, us collector's class them as 'illegal originals' made by the same manufacturer that supplied the US Government, currently a cased HLI Lordship set sells for between $2200 to $2750.USD

The current situation on mainly German eBay is that a fake cased set of the US Navy Medal of Honor is being sold as an original to the unsuspecting collector for up to 1000. Euros - every week on German eBay you see these up for auction. The Germans make the finest quality US Navy Medal of Honor, the strike and detail is near perfect as expected from German precision workmanship, only the US Navy Medal of Honor is copied, because it is just plain metal, with no elaborate green enamel work as found on the US Army and US Air Force MOH, so easy to copy, please view the detailed pictures provided of the German copy.

Then there are the nasty Chinese copies, who make copies of the US Army Medal of Honor and the US Air Force Medal of Honor, again mainly sold on German eBay and UK eBay, the quality and the detail is poor, the enamel work is terrible, the medals suspension system is a joke when you compare it to an original, the inscription on the reverse a bigger joke and the writing style and placement is incorrect 'In the name of the Congress' last week on German eBay, some poor German collector paid over 600.Euros for one of these worthless Chinese pieces of junk .
