WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., introduced legislation Monday that would prevent illegal immigrants from receiving credit cards from American financial institutions.

The Photo Identification Security Act would require banks to use what Blackburn calls "secure forms of identification" to obtain credit. In a statement put out by her office, she says that Bank of America "has come under fire in response to reports that it allows illegal immigrants access to credit cards without proper documentation."

Bank of America spokesmen maintain that they follow the letter of the law in permitting customers to use the forms of identification permissible under the U.S.A. Patriot Act. That includes matricula consular cards issued by the Mexican government.
"The American people deserve to know that the integrity and security of our financial institutions will remain intact," Blackburn said in a statement Monday. "This bill closes a critical loophole that banking institutions have used to circumvent the letter of the law they have used to target illegal aliens as a new source of revenue. It says to banks and illegal immigrants alike, 'You can't get a Visa, without a visa.'"

Bank of America issues the secured, or collateralized, credit cards only after a customer has established a deposit account, and to get a deposit account, the company requires a Social Security number, proof of U.S. government federal taxpayer status, or other documents listed as identification by the Patriot Act.

Getting a credit card and applying for a home loan would be different. Unless the home was purchased with cash the individual would have to have a credit check and that would require a SS card.
A credit card is the banks problem, If the bank is dumb enough to give some a card without a SS Card, I could care less, A secured card is different. You put in $400 in an account and then you get a card with a $400 limit. Id say let that banks do it and then after a year the INS cease the bank records of all that have accounts without a SS Number and pay those, a house call. First freeze there account.

You know this is a sick, sick country when on one hand we spend billions thru the federal government to prevent illegal aliens to come here, and when they are here, the same federal government spends more billions to give the lucky ones who are here, homes.

Contrary to what some have said/written, or to what some believe, a SS card is NOT required to get a credit card. That's wha this proposed legislation is all about, the preventing of banks, and the first culprit was the Bank of America, from issuing a credit card to anyone that does not possess a valid SS number. I hope the legislation is signed into law, and that the banks are fined $1 million per illegally issued card, that the names and addresses of the wetbacks gets posted in newspapers, and that immediate deportation proceedings begin.

From the sublime to the ridiculous. Deb went down to SS to get her name changed. She produced her original birth certificate, drivers license, W-2's, last marriage license, and was told that it was not enough. The SS person is now saying she needs to see her college transcripts. Press one for English!
