The 2011-2012 Intramural Basketball season kicked off with the joint RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath Lady Eagles varsity basketball team hosting the Cambridge University Lady Panthers in an exhibition game at the North Side Fitness Center, RAF Mildenhall, Dec. 1.
The Lady Eagles pulled off a 42-17 win in a show of talent and skill against a competitive Cambridge squad.
Kenneth Dunbar, Lady Eagles coach, said he expects this to be one of many matches with local college and community teams.
"[Our] team has limited opportunities to display their talent against other lady varsity teams," said Dunbar. "The on-base schedule is a tough one against all predominately-male squadrons, but the Lady Eagles compete extremely well, and we expect a few wins."
It was a rare opportunity for the Lady Panthers, who come from all over Europe, to compete on a military installation and feel like a part of the community, said Blaine Landis, Lady Panthers coach.
The Lady Eagles are planning to continue their participation with off base teams when they return to the Damilola Taylor Centre in London to participate in exhibition games with disadvantaged youth. This will be followed by a trip in January to Heidelberg, Germany, to compete in the 15th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational Basketball Tournament at U.S. Army Europe's Patton Fitness Center.
Base teams will continue to compete locally over 12 weeks with squadrons competing for a chance to come out victorious in the February playoffs. The official season closes with the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Basketball Championship games in March.
For information on the lady varsity schedule or additional team information, contact Staff Sgt. Bryson Washington, lady varsity assistant coach, at DSN 238-3918. For a full schedule of intramural events, contact the North Side or Hardstand Fitness Centers at DSN 238-3064 or 238-3735.
